What Are The Differences Between Side-entry Ball Valves And End-entry Ball Valves?

There are great differences in valve body structure, installation and maintenance, as well as application. Specific differences are as follows:
I. Valve structure
Side-entry Ball Valve
Structural characteristics: Sphere inserted from the side of valve body. The valve body may be integral, diploid or tripod.
Integral: The valve body is formed as a whole, and the sphere is inserted from one side, pressing the cover to secure it. Compact structure, but maintenance needs to be completely dismantled; suitable for small diameter, low pressure applications.
Two-piece: The valve body consists of two parts connected by bolts, and the ball can be removed from the middle. Easy to maintain, suitable for medium and small caliber pipelines.
Three-piece package: The valve body consists of three parts (end connection + intermediate valve body), can be repaired without removing the pipe, and is suitable for frequent cleaning (e.g. food, pharmaceutical, etc.).
Strengths: Diverse structures, flexible connection options (e.g. flange, thread, welding) to accommodate different installation requirements. Head-ball valve
Structural characteristics: The sphere is inserted from the top of the valve body and secured by the upper valve cover. The valve body is generally a single piece structure with a relatively large structural height.
Advantages: Easy to repair online, no need to remove valves to replace spheres or seats. Suitable for underground pipelines or applications requiring online maintenance and limited space.
ii. Installation and maintenance
Side-entry valve
Installation: One-part/two-part valves require to be installed as a whole, and three-part valves can be installed individually, suitable for situations where welding connections is required (to avoid damage to internal components).
installation precision is relatively low, but large caliber valves require professional tools for installation.
Repair: Single valve is expensive to repair and requires to be completely replaced. Double/triple valve can be removed for repair but requires to be closed.
Suitable for low maintenance pipeline systems.
Head-ball valve
Installation: Assures that the valve body is coaxial with piping, high installation accuracy, suitable for horizontal or vertical installation.
The overall body reduces leakage points, but it is heavier and requires additional support.
Maintenance: when replacing spheres or seats, there is no need to remove piping, greatly reducing downtime.
Suitable for high pressure, large caliber pipelines (such as long distance oil and gas pipelines) that require quick maintenance.
III. Applicable Scenarios
Side-entry Ball Valves
Advantageous Scenarios:
Pipes requiring frequent dismantling and assembly (e.g. modular equipment in chemical processes).
Welded connection requirements (to avoid damaging internal components).
Cost-sensitive items (lower price per valve).
Typical application:
Long-distance oil and gas pipelines (e.g., side-entry trunnion ball valves).
Multi-port ball valves in chemical process (because the ball is larger, side entry is more convenient).
Top-entry Ball Valves
Advantageous Scenarios:
High-pressure, high-temperature, or corrosive media (e.g., nuclear power, power industry).
Underground pipelines or spatially restricted applications (e.g., subsea pipelines).
Scenarios requiring rapid maintenance (e.g., oil and gas field gathering and transportation systems).
Typical application: VOSC Valbart top-entry ball valves (used in petrochemical and power industries).
Cryogenic top-entry ball valves (e.g. LNG terminal, gas filling stations).
IV. INTRODUCTION Selection Recommendations
It is best to choose the case of the side entry ball valves:
Pipes require to be welded together and the risk of internal component burnout cannot be tolerated.
Budget is limited, operating condition pressure is small, diameter is small.
Flexible connection methods (e.g. threaded connection, quick connection) are required.
Preferred top-ball entry valve:
Operating conditions involve high pressure, high temperature or corrosive media.
Frequent online maintenance is required and downtime costs is costly.
Limited pipeline space limited (e.g., underground pipelines, offshore platforms).
