How to Choose Full Welding Ball Valve

Body material

Generally in plastics; UPVC ball valves are to be used with UPVC pipelines, polypropylene valves are to be used with polypropylene pipelines, and so on. Different plastic piping materials have very different working temperature ranges and very different chemical resistance profiles. The decision of which material to use for your pipeline should be one of the primary considerations, so you should already know the material of your pipeline before considering ball valves.

Seal material

The seals in a ball valve are made from a 'rubber like' material that can be compressed between rigid separable components, to keep the piped media from leaking out from between the components. There are two main materials used for ball valve seals. The 'standard' seal material in many plastic ball valves is EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) which is perfectly suitable for water and many other commonly piped media. The second material is FPM (FKM), which has completely different resistance profile to EPDM. FPM is usually found more in industrial applications as aggressive medias can attack the seal material and cause seals to fail; If piping any media other than water, you may want to check compatibility.

Economy or Industrial

You may see an economy valve with the exact same body material and seal material as an industrial valve from the same brand, so what's the difference? All ball valves are all designed to operate in the same way, but are not of the same material quality and standard of manufacture. Across our product range, you'll notice economy ball valves generally have a blue handle, signifying that they are mainly for use with water and the industrial counterpart is either orange or red handled.

Imperial or Metric

There are two separate pressure piping systems in the UK. Imperial & Metric, they are not interchangeable. It is not a simple case of converting millimetres to inches as one may think. This is a whole subject in itself and will need more explanation, but for the purpose of this article we'll keep it brief. If using metric pipe, only ball valves that are designated as metric will connect directly to metric pipe and the same goes with imperial counterparts. Convertors and adaptors are available to allow the imperial components to connect to metric components, but this may confuse matters when repairs are required in the future.

How to Maintain Full Welding Ball Valve

Selection basis

When selecting a fully welded ball valve, you need to consider the properties of the fluid (such as corrosiveness, temperature, pressure, etc.), system requirements (such as sealing, flow control, etc.) and the environmental conditions of the application (such as indoor or outdoor, whether exposed to extreme weather, etc.). These factors will affect valve selection and performance.

Quality Assurance

When purchasing fully welded ball valves, be sure to choose manufacturers and suppliers with quality assurance. Review relevant quality certifications and product test reports to ensure the valve complies with relevant standards and specifications.

The installation of fully welded ball valves should follow the installation guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Make sure the valve is installed in the correct location and orientation to avoid any conditions that could cause stress concentrations or leaks. During installation, use appropriate tools and materials to ensure welding quality and tightness, butterfly valve company.

Maintenance and overhaul

Regular inspection and maintenance of all-welded ball valves is the key to ensuring their long-term stable operation. This includes regular inspections of the valve’s tightness, operating flexibility and any possible signs of leakage or corrosion. If any problems are found, repair or replace them promptly.

FAQ

Q: What is a welded ball valve?

A: A fully welded valve is designed with a fully welded and forged body to reduce weight and increase strength while eliminating several potential leak points. They are used to connect and shut off the flow of the medium in many different pipeline systems.

Q: Can you solder a ball valve?

A: Soldering a ball valve can be done in an open or closed position. But, soldering ball valves in the closed position are better because they're safe, and there is less chance of damaging any internal parts like seats and seals.

Q: Can you weld a valve?

A: Weld repairs are usually considered when the valve body has a defect that needs to be addressed. Valve bodies are not readily available as spare parts, and the time to procure a valve body may be prohibitively long. The most common welded repairs are those to valve bodies.

Q: What is a solvent weld ball valve?

A: The Holman 50mm Solvent Weld PVC Ball Valve is used for all aspects of back of wall plumbing applications and irrigation through mainline water. Ball Valves have an on and off mechanism. Watermark Approved fitting, manufactured to AS/NZS 1477 standard. 50mm. Shuts off water flow.

Q: Why is a ball valve called a ball valve?

A: A ball valve is a shut-off valve that controls the flow of a liquid or gas by means of a rotary ball having a bore. By rotating the ball a quarter turn (90 degrees) around its axis, the valve is opened or closed and the medium can flow through or is blocked, respectively.

Q: Why is my ball valve leaking after soldering?

A: If it is leaking, the surfaces have become contaminated and the new solder and flux may not penetrate properly to clean the joint at the points where the solder did not flow. In that case you either have to disassemble the joint, or hope that soldering the surface of the joint will make a permanent seal.

Q: Is it good practice to weld valves into place?

A: Valves with Socket Weld, Sil Braze, or Solder Joint ends should always be disassembled prior to welding. Valve pads may be welded directly to a tank or to a section of piping. Because excessive temperature may damage the valve's elastomeric seats and seals, the valve body must be removed from the pad prior to welding.

Q: What is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 ball valve?

A: There is two most popular type of float valves, i.e., part 1 and part 2. Part 1 float valves have a spout on the underside, whereas a correspondingly shaped part 2 ball valve has an outlet spout on the top of its body. The spout of a part 1 ball valve is typically located in a feed or expansion tank.

Q: How much pressure can a ball valve hold?

A: 10,000 pounds per square inch
It is named for the ball inside the valve that rotates. They are used in many areas due to their ease of repair and ability to withstand pressure and temperature. Depending on what they are made of, ball valves can hold up to 10,000 pounds per square inch.

Q: How do ball valves not leak?

A: Regular maintenance: Regular maintenance prevents leaks in ball valves. This includes inspecting the stem, stem packing, and other components for wear and tear, damage, or corrosion and cleaning or replacing the parts as needed.

Q: Can you damage a ball valve when soldering?

A: The short answer is yes, you can damage a ball valve when soldering. The heat from the torch can melt the plastic parts inside the valve, causing it to leak or even rupture. In addition, the flames can char the metal components, making them brittle and more likely to break.

Q: Why is there a hole in a ball valve?

A: Overall, the cavity relief hole, whether referred to as a vented ball, upstream relief hole, or downstream relief hole, is a critical feature in ball valves. It ensures the safety and efficiency of industrial processes by allowing for the controlled release of pressure buildup caused by temperature fluctuations.

Q: What is a welded ball valve?

A: A fully welded valve is designed with a fully welded and forged body to reduce weight and increase strength while eliminating several potential leak points. They are used to connect and shut off the flow of the medium in many different pipeline systems.

Q: Why use butterfly valve instead of ball valve?

A: The differences are: Butterfly valves are used for water-based systems for low-pressure applications, while ball valves are mostly used for gas-based applications with varying pressure and temperature. Butterfly valves have a simpler design, are lightweight and cost less.

Q: Is it better to solder a ball valve open or closed?

A: Should the ball valve be kept open or closed while soldering? Soldering a ball valve can be done in an open or closed position. But, soldering ball valves in the closed position are better because they're safe, and there is less chance of damaging any internal parts like seats and seals.

Q: Do ball valves need to be exercised?

A: Many people choose metal seated ball valves for these applications because they are less prone to corrosion and need less frequent exercising compared to other valves. However, every valve should go through periodic cycle testing. Most people conduct valve exercise programs annually.

Q: Is there a correct way to install a ball valve?

A: Ball valves may be installed in vertical or horizontal pipe runs, they are bi-directional therefore flow direction is not critical, however the best practice is to set up the valve handle to point in the direction of flow whenever possible.

Q: What maintenance is required for ball valve?

A: Ball valve maintenance steps. It is essential to follow a systematic approach to ball valve maintenance, including regular inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and testing to prevent problems before they occur. Regular cleanings: It is important to keep ball valves clean to extend their lifespan.
